Skiied a few couloirs early spring this year, in the generally low hazard that typified the latter half of this winter. Turned around from one or two as well when things didn’t feel quite right. Here’s a few photos from some memorable ones…
coolie on the left. taken early june…we were slighly concerned heading there in April about the ‘hole’. ‘Hole in the floor’ couloir? It’s in K country, so a fitting name
Accidents happen, be prepared. while combining French-Haig-Robertson traverse with Hole-in-the-wall, a member of our group took to the firm couloir too aggressively, made a mistake and fell at speed, stopping 450m lower down with a destroyed ankle (and ski boot). A rope allowed us to lower him 100m to a flat LZ on a snowboard, and down jackets, thermos and bivy sacks were key for the pt. on this cold day. A plb and radio were used to notify kananaskis public safety, avoiding what could have been a long rescue sled epic.
Ducky, stanley glacier
deeper/softer than expected and starting to feel a little slabby. Time to turn around, ski 8 turns and walk for two hours down bare scree slopes.mmm
